This edition was revised by Grandmaster Reuben Fine immediately after his victorious result in the famous tournament at AVRO, the strongest chess tournament in history up until that time. The event was a double round-robin tournament between the eight strongest players in the world. The other players were Keres, Botvinnik, Euwe, Reshevsky, Capablanca, Alekhine and Flohr.
Fine also included opening novelties from the Hastings Tournament and from the Leningrad-Moscow Tournament.
Modern Chess Openings was first published in 1911. It has been updated approximately every five years since and "the many recent master tournaments have rendered necessary an up-to-date book on the Openings". The book is intended to be a guide for match and tournament players.
